Why every lottery needs its own digital strategy

Article

A lottery’s digital strategy starts with the market it serves. The products it can offer, the players it wants to reach and the responsibilities it carries should shape each investment.

Writing for EGR, Nikolina Gabelica, our Managing Director, Lottery, makes the case for a selective approach to digital growth.

“This does not mean every lottery should become everything to everyone,”

Choose a product mix with a purpose

An additional vertical should have a clear role in the offering. A lottery expanding into betting or casino needs to consider how that choice serves its players and fits its wider purpose.

Our work with Hungary’s Szerencsejáték Zrt shows how market conditions translate into specific delivery requirements. When the country’s online sports betting market opened to competition in 2023, its TippmixPRO brand needed a platform suited to that environment.

The requirement to keep customer data in Hungary shaped the infrastructure: we built a local data centre. Player protection requirements informed the integration of age verification, self-exclusion and deposit limits, while a data warehouse supported automated compliance reporting.

These were central to delivering the sportsbook. The project illustrates why decisions about products, infrastructure and compliance need to be made together, with the local operating environment in mind.

Make the offering easier to navigate

Each addition also needs a place in the player experience. Gabelica highlights curation, personalisation and merchandising as increasingly important capabilities as catalogues expand. Choosing what to offer and deciding how players discover it belong in the same conversation.

For lottery teams, that means considering the tools needed to manage the offering alongside the content itself. Segmentation and reporting can support decisions about player journeys, while access to player behaviour data helps teams review and improve those experiences.

Build the capabilities your strategy needs

The technology discussion should follow those priorities. A lottery developing its engagement tools may need a different set of capabilities from one reviewing account management, payments or verification. Identifying the operational requirement gives the investment a clear purpose.

At EveryMatrix, our lottery solutions support that approach through modular or turnkey delivery. Operators can select the capabilities they need, with account management, payments, content and engagement supported by a unified back office.

Player protection belongs in those decisions from the outset. A complete view of player activity and safer gambling status, configurable financial and time limits, and jurisdiction-specific safeguards help operators build responsibility into their digital operations.

The aim is an offering that works as a whole, reflects its market and preserves the lottery’s distinctive
