1. Do make a plan of what you want to do and achieve at the conference

“What are my goals for this conference and how will I achieve them?” These are questions you should ask yourself before you go. Write the answer down and remind yourself to pursue these goals during the conference.

2. Do dare to go beyond small talk

Move beyond the trivial small talk and ask your fellow conference-goers bigger, more intriguing questions such as “What are you really proud of having accomplished in the last year?” or “What are your biggest challenges at the moment?”. You might be able to spark a really interesting conversation this way and create valuable relations.

3. Do bring loads of business cards

Feel like scribbling down your contact details on tiny scraps of paper from the conference program? Not really, right? Prepare for the best and make sure that you bring enough business cards to avoid running out, no matter what happens.

4. Prepare and practice your elevator speak – and stick to it

7. Don’t go “woe is me”-ing

We’ve all had that one customer who was a real pain in the behind, but there is no need to bring that up and start a story-telling competition where focus is more on telling the best story than on actually listening and learning from each other. Instead, focus on the positive stories and remember to listen.

8. Don’t talk too much about your company or yourself

“When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But when you listen, you might learn something new,” said Dalai Lama. He is a wise man. You should listen to him.

9. Don’t be afraid to ask someone’s name again

Ever found that not being able to remember someone’s name kept you from starting a conversation or asking that person a question? We have. Just go ahead and ask for it again.
